Zirconia Crown

A zirconia crown is a type of all-ceramic dental restoration that contains no metal framework, provides a natural tooth appearance thanks to its light translucency, and stands out for its high durability. Zirconia crowns produced with a fully digital workflow at Emrivadent can be delivered on the same day.

What Is a Zirconia Crown?

Zirconium dioxide (ZrO₂) is a biocompatible ceramic material. Zirconia crowns are milled using CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing) technology. Because they contain no metal, they do not cause gum discolouration and the risk of allergic reaction is virtually zero.

Zirconia Crown Procedure Steps

  1. Tooth preparation: The tooth is reduced by 1–2 mm around its circumference.
  2. Digital impression: A 3D impression is taken with an intraoral scanner — no traditional plaster required.
  3. Design (CAD): The crown shape is designed on computer.
  4. Milling (CAM): A zirconia block is machined by a CNC milling unit.
  5. Sintering and colouring: Colour matching is performed and the crown is fired at high temperature.
  6. Bonding: The finished crown is cemented onto the tooth by the dentist.

Types of Zirconia Crowns

  • Monolithic Zirconia: Single piece, maximum strength — ideal for posterior teeth.
  • Layered Zirconia: A porcelain layer is added on top to enhance aesthetics — preferred for anterior teeth.
  • High-Translucency Zirconia: Highest light transmission — superior results for front-tooth aesthetics.

Zirconia Crown FAQ

A zirconia crown has a flexural strength of 900–1200 MPa — more than twice that of metal-ceramic crowns. With proper care it can be used problem-free for 15–20 years.
Yes. High-translucency zirconia refracts light similarly to real enamel, providing an extremely natural appearance. Unlike metal, there is no grey gum line on front teeth.
Yes, 1–2 mm of tooth structure needs to be removed around the tooth. However, this is the same amount as for conventional metal-ceramic crowns. The procedure is painless as it is performed under local anaesthesia.
A zirconia crown is brushed like a natural tooth and flossed regularly. It does not stain and requires no special care. A dentist check-up twice a year is recommended.
Zirconia has higher fracture resistance (900–1200 MPa vs 300–450 MPa) while full ceramic porcelain can offer higher translucency. Since durability is a priority for posterior teeth and aesthetics for anterior teeth, monolithic zirconia is generally preferred for back teeth and high-translucency zirconia for front teeth.
