Porcelain Veneer

A porcelain laminate veneer is a 0.3–0.5 mm thin porcelain shell bonded to the front surface of a tooth. It is one of the most preferred applications in cosmetic dentistry because it requires minimal tooth reduction and offers a natural appearance with its light translucency. Veneer treatment at Emrivadent is completed in an average of 2 sessions.

What Is a Porcelain Veneer?

A veneer (laminate) is a porcelain or composite covering as thin as a fingernail, applied only to the visible front surface of the tooth. Unlike traditional crowns, very little tooth structure is removed, making the procedure largely reversible.

Veneer Procedure Steps

  1. Consultation and Digital Smile Design: Target colour and shape are determined.
  2. Tooth preparation: 0.3–0.5 mm of enamel is removed.
  3. Digital impression: A 3D scan is taken with an intraoral scanner.
  4. Temporary veneer: A temporary covering is fitted during the laboratory process.
  5. Permanent bonding: The veneer is bonded to the tooth with special cement.

Porcelain Veneer FAQ

Porcelain veneers are usually completed in 2 sessions: impression and preparation in the first, permanent bonding in the second. In clinics using CAD/CAM technology it can also be completed in a single session.
In no-prep/minimal-prep veneer procedures, very little enamel is removed. The process is considered irreversible; however, the risk of damaging a healthy tooth is extremely low. They can be used problem-free for many years as long as gum health is maintained.
Porcelain veneers can be used for an average of 10–15 years. They do not stain or change colour. Composite veneers can be renewed every 5–7 years.
No pain is felt as tooth preparation is performed under anaesthesia. Mild sensitivity may occur for 1–3 days after the temporary veneer is fitted; this is temporary.
Porcelain veneers can fracture under hard impact or excessive force. Habits such as nail biting and chewing ice are not recommended. A night guard should be used if teeth grinding (bruxism) is present.
