Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the dental speciality in which crowded, spaced or malocclusion teeth are corrected using brackets, wires or clear aligners. Metal braces, ceramic braces and clear aligner options are available at Emrivadent Antalya.

What Is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the dental speciality concerned with bringing teeth and jaws into the correct position. Incorrect occlusion (malocclusion) causes both aesthetic and functional problems: difficulty chewing, teeth grinding (bruxism), and increased risk of gum disease and cavities.

Orthodontic Treatment Process

  1. Examination: Cephalometric X-ray and plaster/digital model analysis are performed.
  2. Treatment plan: The appropriate method is selected; if extractions are needed, coordination with the dentist is arranged.
  3. Appliance fitting: Brackets are bonded or the first aligner set is delivered.
  4. Control sessions: Wire changes or new aligner series approximately every 4–8 weeks.
  5. Retention: A fixed or removable retainer is applied at the end of treatment to maintain tooth positions.

Clear Aligner Advantages

  • Aesthetics: Nearly invisible
  • Removable: Can be taken out while eating and brushing
  • Comfort: No metal wire injuries
  • Hygiene: Teeth can be brushed normally

There is no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment; it can be applied at any age once bone development is complete. Ages 6–10 in children offer an early intervention opportunity; clear aligners are frequently preferred in adult cases.
Both methods have similar effectiveness for mild-to-moderate cases. Braces provide more precise control for advanced crowding or severe malocclusion. Clear aligners deliver comparable results for mild-to-moderate cases in highly motivated patients and have an aesthetic advantage.
Without retainer use, teeth may tend to drift back to their original positions over time. A fixed retainer is bonded to the back surface for long-term protection; a removable retainer is worn at night.
Soft foods (pasta, rice, vegetables) are suitable. Hard foods (apples, sugarcane), sticky foods (gum, caramel) and very crunchy foods should be avoided as they can cause bracket breakage.
It is uncomfortable rather than painful. Sensitivity and a feeling of pressure in the teeth for 2–3 days after a wire change is normal. Soft food and a painkiller are sufficient during this period.
